*Media Obituary*Edith M. Owens, 87, of Big Spring, died on Saturday, November 20, 2004, in a local nursing home. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 23, 2004 at Trininty Memorial Park Peace Chapel with Rev. Herb McPherson, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Edith was born on May 30, 1917, in Argyle, Texas and married Van Owens in June 1948 in Big Spring, Texas. He preceded her in death on July 1, 2004.Mrs. Owens had lived in Big Spring since 1947. Edith was ahead of the times in the woman's movement becoming the first woman barber in Denison, Texas in 1937. She opened her own barber shop in 1944, retiring in 1989 after 52 years of barbering. Edith loved to travel in the southwest.She was a member of Luther Baptist Church.Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Donald Joe and Judy Simpson of Ruidoso, New Mexico; two grandsons, Mike Simpson of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Donnie Simpson of San Antonio; three granddaughters, Laurie Ann Simpson of Mineola, Jon Donna Simpson of Yukon, Oklahoma, and Cydnia Simpson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, H.H. and Delta Morrison and two brothers, Jack Morrison and Herman Morrison.
