Edith Lucille Barnett Gossett passed away on November 28, 2005, in Big Spring, Texas at the age of 88. After a private burial in Grassland, Texas, the family of Edith Lucille Gossett will be celebrating her life at the First United Methodist Church in Big Spring, Texas, on Wednesday, November 30, 2005, at 11:00 AM, with, Rev. Ben Hubert, pastor of First Christian Church of San Angelo, officiating.Edith Lucille Barnett Gossett was born on July 30, 1917, at Goree, Texas to Rev. Henry Waterson and Mollie Barnett. Being a Depression baby and the daughter of a Methodist minister, Edith lived in several different towns of the Texas panhandle as a youth, eventually graduating from Abernathy High School. She later graduated from Texas Technological College in 1939 with a BA in Business Administration. At Tech, she met her future husband, the love of her live, Ralph. With the advent of World War II, Ralph joined the Army, and Edith began to teach school. On Kentucky Derby Day of 1942, Edith took the train to marry Ralph in Kansas City, Kansas. After the war, Edith and Ralph settled temporarily in Lubbock for several years, and permanently in Big Spring in 1955. She taught for many years in Big Spring elementary schools where she was highly regarded as one of the most respected, talented, and beloved teachers in the area. Around 2001, an informal poll selected Edith as one of the top 20 elementary school teachers in the history of the Big Spring school system.Edith Gossett had a life long passion for learning, was a voracious reader, enjoyed a large circle of friends, and loved nothing better than an interesting debate over dinner with family and friends. In Lubbock, she was a member of the Junior League. In Big Spring, she enjoyed her associations with several clubs such as The Garden Club, Hyperion, Republican Women, and Retired Teachers. At the First United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday School, served on the board, attended Bible Studies, and was a devoted member of her Sunday School Class.She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Loyd and Verl Barnett and a sister, Mrs. Elmer (Maxine) Tarbox of Lubbock. Edith is survived by her husband of 63 years, Ralph Wilson Gossett, her children, Greg Gossett and wife, Leslie, of San Angelo, Texas, Robert Gossett and wife, Diane, of Prosper, Texas, and Ellen Gossett of Midland, Texas; grandchildren, Stephen, Sarah and Allison Gossett of San Angelo, Texas, and Jared and Jeffrey Gossett of Prosper, Texas; her sister and brother-in-law, Josie Lee and Keith Hubbard of Denison; her sister and brother-in-law, Loy Catherine and Delaine Crawford of Lubbock; and nieces and nephews, all for whom she cared deeply.Edith Gossett's family extends their deepest gratitude to friends, Mr. and Mrs. Augustine Paredez (and sons Andrew and Jared), and Dr. and Mrs. Bruce Cox for their loving watchfulness over our parents. We also express our gratitude to Mrs. Marcie Rivera, Mrs. Tommie Regalado, Ms. Jennifer Regalado, Mrs. Mary Rodriguez, and Home Hospice for the tender care they gave our Mother in her last months of her life.
