Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, December 10, 2021 at 10am at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church with inurnment to follow at Resthaven Cemetery.
Dr. Leung was born on December 21, 1941 in Hong Kong, the second eldest of seven children. His mother dreamed of having a doctor in the family after watching the hit TV show Dr. Kildare and put her hopes on Patrick. At age 19, he ventured on an eighteen day journey by sea to Vancouver where he met his childhood friend, Francis Law. From there the two then traveled by rail another seven days to Prince Edward Island on just bread and butter, a few bucks and heads full of dreams.
He completed his first year of studies at St. Dunstan’s University, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, before transferring to the University of Alberta in Edmonton where he graduated in General Sciences and was then awarded his M.D. degree in 1968. It was there that he was smitten when he saw his his future wife Nancy who was an RN featured in an Asian student fashion show. The young couple later married a year later and subsequently settled in the small mining town of Timmins, Ontario where he practiced family medicine before relocating to Midland in 1980. He hung up his solo practice shingle, the Alamo Family Practice Clinic, in 1981 and practiced there faithfully until his retirement in 2018.
Patrick was a man of humble beginnings but had tremendous vision, drive and focus. He was a no nonsense man of few words who embraced the practical, but had a heart for helping others particularly those in need. He really cared about his patients and not just their physical conditions, but more importantly their emotional well being. He wanted everyone to be happy. Dr. Leung passionately loved the field of medicine and was instrumental in inspiring not only his three children in that direction but anyone else who was interested. He was a generous man and would fight to the death for the bill. To him, food was an expression of love. He enjoyed a good burger, Long John Silvers and most of all his beloved dim sum. Just last week he wanted to fly his extended family to Hong Kong for one last great banquet. As such, he really enjoyed traveling with his wife and was able to see all 6 continents except for Antartica with her. He loved movies, Korean soap operas, broadway and classical music and was constantly reading everything from magazines, newspapers, John Grisham’s legal thrillers, and biographies. He was truly a man of many interests.
He is preceded in death by his father Nou Leung and mother Chan Ho Man, his older sister Yok Ling (Elaine) Ho and younger sister Juliana Apple Leung.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Leung of 55 years; children, Dr. Karen Leung, Dr. Christina Leung (Tho) and Dr. Michael Leung (Dr. Deborah Phan) and his eight grandkids, Caroline, Emily, Elizabeth, Madeline, Ava, Owen, Johnathon and Alexander; his brother Dick (Connie) Leong of Akton, Massachusetts , sisters, Claire (Vernon) Pullin of Plymouth, United Kingdom, Cecilia (Arthur) Yuen of Burnaby, British Columbia, and Perpetua (KY) So of Auckland, New Zealand.
Dr . Leung was grateful to those who were generous to him when he was a young foreign student. He believed in education.
The family suggests memorials in lieu of flowers be donated to his alma mater The University of Alberta School of Medicine:
