OC Collins 89, went home to the Lord on April 23, 2014. Otho Clay Collins Jr. was born in Houston, Texas, March 4, 1925 to OC Collins Sr. and Mattie Vera (Dill) Collins. He moved to Midland, Texas with his parents in 1925 when he was six months old. He attended and graduated from Midland schools, working continuously on the family’s dairy farm while he was growing up. OC married Frances Palmer, his childhood sweetheart, 70 years ago on May 26, 1944 in Midland.\tOC joined the army in 1944 where he served in the Philippine Islands and Japan in WWII. He was discharged in 1947 with a Bronze Star, and a combat infantry award. He was a lifetime member of the VFW.\tFollowing the war he attended Abilene Christian College and later transferred to the Texas A&M School of veterinary medicine in College Station. After graduation from A&M he returned to Midland in 1952 where he practiced veterinary medicine for 60 years. He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Texas Veterinary Medical Association, and the Permian Basin Veterinary Medical Association.\tOC served as an Elder of the North “A” and Tennessee Street Church of Christ. In 1958 OC and several other men began working on securing a state charter for a Christian school in Midland. This school was Midland Christian School which had its first classes at the annex building of North A and Tennessee Street Church of Christ. He was a charter trustee of Midland Christian School which moved to the school’s current location on Culver Street. He served as an Elder at the Golf Course Road Church of Christ for 30 years. OC truly loved serving in the church.\tAfter selling his veterinary clinic he worked with his wife Frances, who owned Bramwell Yarns of Midland. He also had a pilot’s license, and enjoyed SCUBA diving, deer hunting, and politics. He enjoyed travel with Frances which included trips to China, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Brazil, Sweden, England, Holland, Canada, the Cayman Islands, and Mexico, and many states in the US. Later he served as a relief veterinarian in several local veterinary clinics and the SPCA until he was 86.\tOC was known for his love of people. His chosen profession was a source of pleasure and he had a lifelong love for animals.\tHe is survived by his wife Frances (Palmer) Collins, his children Allan Collins and his wife Ann of Midland, daughter, Karan Marko and her husband Virgil, of College Station, Texas, daughter, Melody Lewellen and her husband Bill of Midland, and, Stephen Collins and his wife Darling, of Midland. OC is also survived by 11 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.\t \t \tVisitation will be held at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home from 3:00 to 5:00 PM on Sunday, April 27, 2014.
