Nell W. Sanders, M.D., 95, of Big Spring , died on Saturday, October 30, 2004, at her residence. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, November 2, 2004 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Richard Reagan, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.Vigil services will be held 7:00 PM, Monday, November 1, 2004, at the Nalley- Pickle and Welch Rosewood Chapel.She was born on August 5, 1909, in DeRidder, Louisiana and married Dr. Virgil Sanders on September 9, 1942 in Galveston, Texas. He preceded her in death on February 3, 1998.Dr. Nell Sanders was a registered nurse and medical technician before attending medical school, having taken nursing training at St. Mary's Hospital in Port Arthur and Hotel Dieu in Beaumont, working laboratory work at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston. She took her pre-medical work at the University of Texas in Austin and attended the University of Texas Medical School, Galveston and her post graduate work was done in the Baltimore Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Nell and her husband, Dr. Virgil Sanders, came to Big Spring in 1945, practicing a year in the old Malone Hospital and then in Stanton three years before joining Dr. Preston Sanders, Virgil's brother, in building and operating the Medical Arts Hospital in 1949. The hospital remained open until 1979 when the hospital floors were closed. The first floor clinic continued to stay open until 1993, when Dr. Virgil and Dr. Nell retired. The Medical Arts Hospital had another service, it trained and graduated Licensed Vocational Nurses from September of 1952 until February 1, 1968. Many of those nurses still work in the Big Spring area. Dr. Nell still owned the building, which is now an office building, at the time of her death. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.Survivors include a son, Randy Sanders of Garden City; a daughter, Ann Sanders of Big Spring and a son, John Mark Sanders of Glasscock County; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; longtime, dear friends, Charlene and Roy Smith, Elvira Olivas and Paula Franco.She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Gordon Morris White.
