Dorothy Nell Thompson, departed from this life on May 31, 2024, at the age of 83. The family will receive friends from 5:00pm-7:00pm, Thursday, June 6, 2024 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, Friday, June 7, 2024 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside service will follow at Hill Cemetery in Gouldbusk, Texas.
Born in Eldorado, TX, on February 15, 1941, she leaves a legacy of unwavering dedication to education, marked by over four decades of impassioned teaching.
Dorothy’s passion for education and dedication to her students were truly unparalleled. She graduated as Valedictorian from Mozelle High School and went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Howard Payne University, also as Valedictorian. Dorothy later obtained her master’s in education from Sul Ross State University and worked tirelessly as an English teacher for more than four decades, making a lasting impact on the lives of countless students. Dorothy taught at Lake View High in San Angelo from 1962-1966, Lee High School in Midland from 1970-1984, English Department and writing specialist at Goddard Jr. High from 1984-2007, for a total of 41 years at MISD.
Throughout her career, Dorothy was recognized as an outstanding educator, earning accolades like educator in Who’s Who in American Education, and voted teacher of the year at Goddard Jr. High. Her commitment to excellence extended beyond the classroom, as she mentored students in programs like AVID and academic decathlon. Dorothy was an active member of various professional teaching organizations, where she held leadership roles and contributed to the field of education.
Outside of her career, Dorothy was a devoted church member, serving as a Sunday school teacher and choir member. She also found joy in sponsoring extracurricular activities like the Rebelettes at Lee High School and supporting the Rebels football team during their memorable State Championship run in 1983.
Dorothy is survived by children, Lori Thompson Tarlton, James and Britni Thompson; grandchildren, Micheal Howk and Courtney Parker, Jackson Thompson, Piper Thompson; and great grandson, Gavin Howk.
