Dorothy Mildred Riley Strickland, 88 of Midland passed away Friday, January 25, 2013. Dorothy was born August 1, 1924 in Paris Arkansas, to Rev. L L Riley and wife Josephine. They moved to Russellville, Arkansas shortly after her birth. The family moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas her senior year in high school where she graduated in 1942. She lived most of her life in Midland, Texas after she was married. She was a preachers daughter and grew up in Arkansas. She ran away from home at 19 years old and went to Gainesville, Texas to meet her future husband that she was introduced too by a common friend during WWII whom she had only talked on the phone and had written letters for about 2 months. She arrived in Gainesville, Texas late on a Friday night June 16, 1944 and got married to William Burnon Strickland the next day June 17, 1944 and that marriage lasted until June 6, 2000 when he passed away. 56 years 11 months and 6 days.This marriage produced 4 children of which Jerry Joe Strickland and Tana Gail Strickland both died at birth. Survivors are son (Bill) William B Strickland, Jr. and wife Virginia of Stanton and daughter Pamela Sue Strickland Busbee of Midland and the late Bobby Lee Busbee. Grandchildren, Melissa Ann Strickland Burnett and spouse Gary of New Braunfels, Texas; Brian Todd Strickland and spouse Christy of New Braunfels, Texas; Cody Lee Busbee of Midland; and Lindsay Renee Busbee Haltom and spouse Chris of Edmond, Oklahoma; 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.Dorothy lived in Midland for 66 years. During part of that time she worked in a small deli/hamburger place in west Midland called Bowens Drug Store on Thomason Drive behind Bowens Grocery Store located at Wall & Thomason. She served many hamburgers, pimento cheese sandwiches and tuna fish sandwiches to lots of Midland residence. Our mother was the sweetest little lady and will be deeply missed. Graveside services will be on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 1:00PM with Rev. Myron Unruh officiating at Resthaven Cemetery in Midland.
