Dorothy Lee McQuerry was born on January 25, 1929, in Ft. Stockton, TX to parents Reeves Burton and Barnie Mae Smith. Dorothy had three siblings – Christene Waddill, Calvin Smith, Patty Anderson, who are now all deceased.
She attended Tokyo Elementary School, a country school near Midland, and her means of getting to school was riding a one-eyed horse named Lucy with her older brother and sister.
Dorothy attended Midland High School and was a dedicated member of the MHS volleyball team for four years. Due to her height, spiking the ball was her specialty.
After her graduation from high school, she worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell, where she was always told that her voice “carried well”.
She met her husband, Bradley McQuerry, after her best friend (also named Dorothy) began dating his brother, Vernon. The two of them married the McQuerry brothers, and they were both “Dorothy McQuerry” for numerous years. Cancer took her Brad’s life in 1990, and she never married again. They enjoyed 40 years together. She always told everyone with whom she came into contact that there was never another man out there for her but Bradley McQuerry!
Dorothy is survived by her two sons – Gary McQuerry and wife, Marsha, Randy McQuerry and wife, Gaye, and one daughter – Delaina Ontiveros and her husband, Fabian. Since Dorothy’s husband and children were her main priorities, she was a homemaker and caregiver for her much-loved family for numerous years.
Being physically active was a large part of her nature, and no matter what the temperature was, she and her friends walked three to four miles a day for 40+ years.
She was a faithful member of Coahoma Church of Christ for 36 years. In 2010 she made the decision to move back to Midland in order to be closer to family members. She was a member of Westside Church of Christ in Midland.
She thoroughly enjoyed six grandsons, three granddaughters, eleven great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter throughout her 94 years. Dorothy’s life was happy, full, and blessed beyond measure.
