Memorial Services for Doris Welsh are scheduled for 10:00 am, Saturday, October 3, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church of Midland.Doris Riddle Welsh died Friday, September 25, 2015, after a multi-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Doris and her twin sister, Dorothy, were born on August 4, 1923, to Lena and William Riddle, in Nicholasville, Kentucky. Her parents met at the local Presbyterian Church where her mother was the organist and her father was the choir leader. She grew up on her parents’ tobacco farm, along with two brothers and two sisters. She often spoke fondly of riding on the back of the tractor with her twin sister on the opposite side, putting plants into the ground as her father drove the tractor.Upon completing high school, Doris went to work at Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky. While working there, she met George Barrett Welsh, Jr., and they were married on January 16, 1943. Doris continued to work at the camp during World War II while George was overseas. Upon his discharge from the army, he met his two year old daughter, Kaye, for the first time. Their son, James Barrett (Jim) Welsh, was also born in Nicholasville four years later. Doris and George lived in multiple places with Baroid Oil Company and later with the DuPont Corporation which transferred them to Midland in 1955. They lived in Midland for twelve years and were among the original members of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Doris served as church secretary as well as personal secretary to Rev. Richard (Dick) Braun during this time. DuPont then transferred the family to Richardson, TX; Charlotte, NC; Houston, TX: and Montgomery, AL. Upon retirement, George and Doris chose to return to Midland where they enjoyed time with their family and many friends. Once back in Midland, they lived a busy and happy life. They were active members of First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed multiple bridge clubs and volunteering at the Petroleum Museum and the Santa Rita Club. Doris was an excellent bridge player and earned three master points. She made many friends playing cards and was especially fond of her companions in her bridge groups. She missed them greatly after her “retirement” from the game due to Alzheimer’s.She is survived by her son, James B. Welsh, M.D., and his wife, Juanice, of Midland; her grandson, Christopher Barrett Welsh and his wife, Lorin, of Dallas; her grandson, Brian David Welsh, M.D., of Keller, TX; and her two great-granddaughters, Kinley Grace Welsh and Nora Riley Welsh, also of Dallas. She is also survived by her twin sister, Dorothy Wilson of Kettering, OH; eleven nieces and nephews; and multiple great nieces and nephews.A memorial service is planned for on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church of Midland, 800 W. Texas Ave.Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 4400 N. Big Spring St., Midland, TX 79701 or First Presbyterian Church of Midland, 800 W. Texas Ave., Midland, TX 79701.The family would like to thank the staff at Manor Park for all the loving care given to Doris.,
