DORIS JUNE (COLLIER) WELCH
June 29, 1926- March 27, 2024
Doris was born at her grandmother’s home in Wise County, Texas, in 1926. Her early years were spent in Electra, Texas, graduating in 1943 from Electra High School. She then attended West Texas State University for two semesters, studying journalism, and was a member of Delta Zeta Chi, before joining the war effort by working at the Italian Prisoner of War Camp in Hereford, Texas. When Ramon Welch came home from serving in the Navy aboard a minesweeper, they were married on December 20, 1945. They had three children, Denise, Troy, and Mike. The family lived in Vernon, Wichita Falls, Snyder, and Midland, Texas.
She worked at the Snyder Daily News, and later as secretary for Mobil Oil in Midland for thirteen years. Her main interest in life was her husband and children. Her hobby was oil painting, and she was active in the Midland Palette Club for many years and loved sharing her paintings with many people. She loved books, and was a prodigious reader, becoming one of the best patrons of the Texas State Library’s Talking Book Program, listening to more than 8,000 books since she lost her sight about 20 years ago.
She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, and was guided always by Proverbs 31:10, which says that who can find a virtuous woman, for her price is far above rubies – to her it meant striving to be a devoted wife and mother, a godly woman both in the home and outside.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ramon Welch in 1996, and is survived by her three children, Denise Schmidt (Terry) of Sacramento, CA, Troy Andrew Welch, and Michael Dell Welch (Marcia), of Midland, TX, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at Resthaven Memorial Park.
Donations may be made to the Texas State Library’s Talking Book Program, which provides audio books to the sight impaired.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland. Online condolences may be made at www.npwelch.com.
