Donna Newsom, of Midland, Texas, finished her race and was received into Heaven on Sunday, September 27th, 2026. A celebration of her life will be held on October 5th, 2026 at First Baptist Church Sanctuary at 10 am. Internment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring, Texas at 2:00 pm.
Donna was born in San Angelo, Texas on September 11, 1938 to Foster and Frances Shirley. The family moved to Garden City, and later to Big Spring, Texas where she attended and graduated from Big Spring High School. In high school, she met and married the love of her life, Bobby Newsom. They married in 1957 and celebrated 59 years together before Bob passed away in 2016.
Donna was known as a wonderful cook who delighted her family and friends with her homemade pies, cakes and holiday feasts. She was a dedicated homemaker always putting others ahead of herself. She enjoyed taking food to the sick and caring for her family. Through the years, Donna and Bob enjoyed many fishing trips to Lake Amistad where they spent time with family and dear friends. She always prepared delicious food for everyone who came to fish at their little place affectionately named the “Nest.” She also volunteered at Midland Memorial Hospital for over 10 years as a Pink Lady where she worked in the gift shop.
As a young woman, she became a volunteer with Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF), a ministry devoted to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and teaching the truth of God’s Word to children. She spent hours studying and preparing lessons for the children and hosted “Good News Clubs” in her home where many children in the neighborhood would come weekly to learn about Jesus. She also reached children through other locations in parks and fairs and eventually in the schools. She taught sunday school in every church she attended through the years. Donna planted “seeds” in the hearts of children for over 60 years. We will only know the full impact someday in glory! The “Donna Newsom” award was recently created, with Donna as the first recipient, to honor a CEF volunteer who exemplifies the love of Jesus to children. Looking back on her ministry she said it was the greatest joy of her life! Donna’s life was defined by her love for Jesus and God’s word, her servant heart and the joy of sharing the Gospel of Jesus with all people at home and abroad where she supported many missionaries. Because of her faithfulness, many people have trusted Jesus and will go on to lead others to Christ.
Donna is survived by her children, Robin Wilson (Tom) of Midland, David Newsom (Katerine) also of Midland, grandchildren Dustin Scott (Tabitha) of Andrews, Leah Williams (Taylor) of Midland, Jordan Wilson (Julie) of Austin, Rikki Pinson of Seminole, Tex Washington (Ashley) of Lancaster, Kentucky, Kirklynd Groeschel (Matt) and Brady Newsom also of Midland.
