Donna Kay Stephens was born in Midland, Texas on August 28, 1949. Because of an illness when she was 5 years old, she lost her vision and then set forth on a journey of courage and inspiration as she attended schools in Midland and Odessa. Kay graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1970. She took many years of piano lessons and also sang in the Acapella Choir at Lee. After graduation, she attended Arkansas Enterprises for the Blind for business training and then returned to Midland. On May 7, 1974 she became a vendor at the George Mahon Federal Building and Post office where she operated "Kay's Koncessions", which was later renamed "Tall City Snack Shop". Many people were touched by her cheerful attitude and uncanny ability to recognize them just from their voices.
