Donald Dee Futrell was born June 14, 1929 in Glen Cove, Texas (Coleman County), along with his twin sister Dorothy, to Fronie and Will Futrell. He left this earth on July 13, 2014. He attended and graduated from Centennial High School in 1948 where he lettered in basketball all four years. Don joined and was baptized in the White Chapel Baptist Church in 1943 in Coleman. He later attended Cotton Flat Baptist Church in Midland. In November 1950 he enlisted in the US Army at the suggestion of Uncle Sam and served in the Coleman Barracks near Manheim, Germany, 2nd Armor Division Headquarters Company of Combat Command A. While there he attended radio operator and repair school. Upon discharge he moved to Midland and worked for Fitzgerald Weather Mart as an air conditioning tech until he went into business with his brother Bill in 1957 for 15 years. During this time, he married Edwina Camp and to that union three children were born – Patricia, Carolyn, and Gary. He later married Hisako Satterfield and to this union a daughter Clara was joined. He was self-employed in Midland for 50 years.Over the years he was involved in the American Legion and was Commander of Post 19 in 1963 when he was asked to form a Texas State Guard Company in this area. The company performed so well that the group headquarters was moved here. He later served as group commander and resigned in the rank of Colonel. Don was preceded in death by his brother Harold, a son Gary and a grandson Chase Quine. He is survived by his wife Hisako; daughters, Patricia, Carolyn, and Clara; grandsons, Jake Quine, Scott Futrell, Shawn Scott and Koleton Wingo; granddaughters, Paige Futrell, Kristin Quine, Kaitlin Wingo, and Hope Scott; three great grandsons and one great granddaughter; his brothers, Bill and DK of Abilene; sister, Dorothy of Phoenix; and several nieces and nephews. He loved his family and his three faithful dog companions. He will be missed by all of us but we are thankful he is no longer suffering. Thanks to all who have prayed for us as we traveled this journey the last couple of months. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Tuesday, July 15, 2014. Funeral services will be held at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Chapel at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 with Pastor Rick Holeman officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Cotton Flat Baptist Church, 6409 S State Highway 349, Midland, Texas 79706.
