Delmer Lee Turner, 82, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, January 21, 2014 in a local nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, January 25, 2014 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home. Delmer was born March 9, 1931 in Big Spring, and married Evelyn Sue Norris, November 18, 1966 in Big Spring. She preceded him in death September 21, 1985. Delmer was an exceptional athlete. He graduated from Big Spring High School in 1948 and was inducted into the BSHS Hall of Fame in two sports. He played football for the only team that Howard College ever fielded and also played basketball. He finished college at what is now Lamar State University, playing football, basketball and running track. After college, he toured the northeast with a semi-pro basketball team. He became a teacher and started at Gayhill School. Later, he moved to Sands High School and taught business classes. He retired in 1989 to a life full of golfing which he loved. His kindness was respected by all who knew him. He is survived by one son, Joe Turner and wife, Susan, of Luther; grandson, Matthew Turner; two sisters, Geneva Kiser and husband, Bob of Ft. Worth, and Edwina Stewart of Abilene; a great friend, Robert Beall; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Henry and Emma Gertrude (Smith) Turner; four sisters, Birdie Turner, Lucille Turner, Martha Burgner, and Clotee Reynolds; and two brothers, Paul Turner and Jim Turner.
