Dean Jernigan Deerfield of Midland, Texas was born in Simms, Texas to Newt and Francis (McKnight) Jernigan, and was 91 at her passing.
Dean graduated from Texarkana High School in 1952 and later earned an associate degree in Child Development from Midland College, an achievement she cherished. She married Fred Deerfield, and together they raised Greg, Tasha, Tracy (Joe) Roome, Kimberly (Rick) Lynn, Scott, and their chosen daughter, Barbara (Bohl) Gammeter.
She was a proud grandmother to Jessica Lynn and her children Maleah, Jordan, and Chloe; Melissa (Trey) Muston and son Liam; Diane (Billy) Trip and children Bailey and Andrew; Renee Trip and children Travis and Olivia; Melody (Scott) Trip and sons Austin (Britney) and Winston (Maci) and daughter Dalenne (Mike) Garcia and their children Gavin and Gracelyn; Bryce (Gretchan) Gammeter and daughters Amelia and Elise; and Mack (Holly) Gammeter and daughter Lindsey.
Dean was preceded in death by her husband Fred Deerfield, Jr., son Greg Deerfield, siblings Robert Jernigan, Thelma Coleman, John and Lorene Bohl, niece Sylvia Hodges, and nephew Larry Trip.
A longtime member of the Midland Quilt Guild, Dean was renowned across West Texas for her award-winning Crazy Quilts. She also mastered pottery, ceramics, painting, sewing custom wedding gowns, jewelry making, wool felting, and cake decorating. She worshiped at First Methodist Church in Fort Stockton for many years and later at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Midland.
Dean will be remembered for her faith, creativity, and unconditional love. Through teaching and sharing gifts, she touched countless lives. Her legacy lives on in the beauty she created and the love she gave so freely.
Memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Midland.
