David Randolph Smith

David R. Smith, age 64 of Midland, TX, left this world to be with the Lord on May 31^st after a valiant battle with frontotemporal dementia. David was born on July 19^th, 1957, to Charles and Mary Jane Smith in Harrison, OH. He spent his formative years in Rutland VT and Bright IN. He graduated from East Central High School and then attended Taylor University and Purdue University where he graduated with a degree in Aerospace Engineering.

While at Taylor University he met Carol Jean Stipanuk and they wed on August 5^th, 1978. Carol and David went on to have 7 children (you read that right), all of them following in their father’s footsteps as engineers. After graduating from Purdue University, the young family made their way to Oklahoma where David went to work as a Cement Engineer for Haliburton Energy Services. Little did David know how many of his children would follow in his footsteps and work in the oilfield. David was blessed with a colorful career in the oilpatch working off the coast of Italy, in the jungles of Ecuador’s Amazon Rain Forest, among the canals of the Netherlands and in countless other oilfields across the world. Ultimately, he co-founded Boaz Energy, LLC, a successful Exploration and Production Company based out of Midland, Texas with his daughter Karan. David, who was more of a scientist than an engineer, was awarded 17 U.S. Patents during his career.  His sketch pad was never far away as he contemplated various ways to more efficiently produce, lift or recover oil and gas. Outside of work David spent most of his time with his growing family. He instilled in them strong Christian values, an incredible work ethic and humility. He truly led by example, served his family well and loved them unconditionally.

David is predeceased in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Carol Jean Smith; his sister Lisa (Mark) Lingross, his brother Douglas (Jessie) Smith, his seven children, Emily Kaye Smith, Karan Elaine (Marshall) Eves, Kaleb David (Danielle) Smith, Ian David (Emily) Smith, Haley Ann (Matthew) Pemelton, Kiley Elizabeth (Isaac) Hayes, Ethan David Smith and his ten grandchildren, Maxwell James, Porter James, Stella Grace, Paxton June, Hewitt Griffith, Lux Lee, Cooper Hood, Taz David, Hollyn Grace and Sutton Leigh.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00am, Friday, June 3, 2022 at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland.
