Damita Sue Cornelius was born October 25, 1959, in Midland, Texas, to Bryant and Maggie Cornelius. She was the second of three girls.Sue attended elementary through high school in Midland. She attended Robert E. Lee High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society and golf team. She graduated from Lee High in 1977. She continued her education at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. She held offices in several student organizations, promoted student programs, and participated in intramural athletics. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering in 1983.During summers, Sue worked for Dr. Viola Coleman and Arco Pipeline Company. She returned to Midland after graduation and worked as a private bookkeeper before gaining employment with Gulf Oil in 1984. In 1985, Sue relocated to Concord, California, with Chevron as an oil and gas accountant until 1992. She returned to Midland and was employed with Midland Memorial Hospital, Materials Management department in 1994. She later became a Purchasing Manager and continued in the position until August, 2014. She loved her job and was active in hospital leadership and community programs.Sue was active in community service and participated in United Way. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Midland Alumnae Chapter, and the Negro Business & Professional Women’s Club where she served in both as an officer.Sue united with Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Horace F. Doyle. She remained a faithful member and served in many auxiliaries until her health declined.She was preceded in death by her father.To cherish her memory, she leaves her mother, Maggie L. Cornelius of Midland, Texas; two sisters, Cynthia K. Cornelius of Dallas, Texas, and Mary Angela Phelps (Cleveland) of Midland, Texas; niece, Chelsea Phelps of Midland, Texas; nephews, Bryant Phelps (Courtney) of Dallas, Texas, Zhuric and Evan Phelps of Midland, Texas; great aunt, Allen “Sister” Stiggers of Midland, Texas; Godson, Courtney H. Massingill of Midland, Texas; and aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends. Family friends: Bertrand and Odessa Taylor and the Lewis family. Special friends: Trina Lewis, Ronnie Valentine, Shawn Edgerton, Debbie Flloyd, Loree Williams, Amy Fultz, Mark and Rachel Hanna, and Mary Fritz.An Omega Omega-Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Midland Alumnae Chapter, will be held at 5:30 pm, Friday, September 26, 2014 at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, September 26, 2014 at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am,Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church inMidland with Pastor Tommie L.
