Cynthia LaNell Nicholson, 71, passed away on June 22, 2026, in Midland, Texas. Born on November 22, 1954, in Lubbock, Texas, to Peggy and Leland D. Nicholson, Cindy was raised in Midland by her mother, Peggy, and stepfather, Jess Thompson.

Cindy graduated from Lee High School in 1972 and soon after began her professional journey at A-1 Business Service. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to own and operate A-1 Floral, where she brought beauty and joy to the lives of those around her. She later moved into management at the Bingo Barn, a chapter of her life that became much more than a career; it was where she built lasting friendships and became a beloved fixture.

Cindy was a deeply caring and loving person. Sissy, as she was affectionately called by her nieces and nephews, whose house was the heart of family gatherings, where holidays meant big dinners shared around the table, the grownups laughing over cards and games while the children filled her wonderfully large game room with the sounds of play. Sunday traditions brought their own special joy as well, church followed by fried chicken back at the house, with the kids always eager to stay a little longer for a chance to ride four-wheelers or play with the horses. Those moments are among the most treasured memories held by those who loved her. She also cherished a dear and lasting friendship with Patsy Price, who was a constant presence in her life.

A true animal lover at heart, Cindy had a special passion for raising and showing miniature horses. In her final years, she was lovingly accompanied by her two faithful dog companions, Lacey and Lilly, who brought her endless joy and comfort.

Cindy was preceded in death by her mother, Peggy Thompson; her father, Leland D. Nicholson; her stepfather, Jess Thompson; two sisters, Debi Myers and Donna Lemons; a beloved granddaughter, Coralynn Newton; and a nephew, Stephen Marlowe, Jr. She was also preceded in death by James Newton, the father of her children and the man she considered her rock and soulmate. Though their paths diverged, Cindy never stopped treasuring the love they shared in their early years together, keeping close the handwritten notes he had given her before they were married, a quiet testament to a bond that time never fully erased.

She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Kelly, and Stephanie’s children, Madison and Conner; her son, Tim Newton, and his wife, Chloe, and their children, Emmi-Lynn and Gavin Newton; and Tim’s children, Cole, Sarina, and Taylor Newton; her youngest son, David Newton; her sister, Elaine Newman, of Florida; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to MASA Rescue in Midland, Texas, or to the Springboard Center, in loving memory of her nephew, Stephen Marlowe, Jr.
