Connie JoAnn Montgomery was born April 29, 1932 to Cecil and Novella Adair Montgomery in Glazier, Texas. The family moved to Midland three years later. As a product of the Midland school system, JoAnn graduated from MHS with the distinction of being the last Texas class with an eleven year curriculum in 1949.
She chose education as a career while still a high school student. After her graduation from Baylor University, she taught fourth grade in San Angelo and Midland. Secondary social studies led her to San Jacinto Jr. High and Midland and Lee High Schools before becoming an Instructional Service Administrator/Assistant Principal at Lee in 1978. In addition to her MISD career, JoAnn taught in (DOD) Dependent Schools in West Germany for two years with a leave of absence from MISD.
Three earned degrees from Baylor University, plus graduate work at University of North Carolina, SMU, University of Colorado, Sul Ross and Texas Tech. enabled JoAnn to teach at Midland College plus work with a state wide educational appraisal service after her retirement from MISD in 1985.
JoAnn was selected Midland High School Teacher of the Year in 1964. Her leadership in three different high schools as a Student Council Sponsor for 20+ years and service on the Texas Board of Student Councils was recognized in 1985 in Austin. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society and other professional associations.
From junior high through retirement, JoAnn was active in her church’s choir programs, local and international missions projects, and work at the Midland Baptist CRISIS center. A short time travel agent retirement career allowed her to travel the world with friends and family. A favorite pastime was traveling with family members, life long friends, and former students “just one-on-one.”
