Cletha Clayton, 84, of Big Spring, died on Sunday, July 27, 2008, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, August 2, 2008 at the East Fourth Street Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Gentry, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.She was born on January 16, 1924, in Fannin County, Texas and married W. L. Clayton on November 24, 1939 in Bonham. He preceded her in death on April 4, 1987.A longtime resident of Big Spring, Cletha and her husband, W. L. moved here in the 1950's where he worked for the railroad. In the face of many difficulties, including the deaths of her daughter, son and husband, Cletha maintained a strong commitment to her Christian faith, and was a shining example of how a Christian should live their life. She was a member of East Fourth Street Baptist Church where she taught primaries for twenty years and was a member of the bereavement committee. Her tireless efforts helped to comfort hundreds of bereaved families over the years. Her decorations always filled the church fellowship hall during meals for grieving family members.Cletha was known for her annual Halloween parties, which drew many generations of families over the years. She also loved decorating for other holidays and on any given holiday, her home would be decorated from top to bottom with beautiful decorations that she had collected over the years.Cletha loved the color purple, which is evident all around her home that she loved so much. She took loving care of her flowers and plants in the yard, which was always immaculately trimmed and green. She also loved feeding the birds, with many bird feeders and bird baths in her yard.Survivors include one son, Jerry Clayton of San Antonio; two brothers, Herman Jones of Midland, and Edwin Jones of Charlotte, Michigan. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Sue and a son, Barry. Arrangements under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring. Jerry, she's lovely, what a beautiful tribute to a beautiful woman. This is apparent in that she raised such a fine son. I am thinking of you during this difficult time of loss. Paz mi amigo.

Cletha and I grew up in Bonham. I remember when she was married to Jerry's dad: She was a pretty young girl and I was a little shirttail kid. Our paths reconnected about four years ago, and we wrote letters and enjoyed phone visits. She was a beautiful Christian, praising God for his blessings great and small. And now she is in his presence, claiming her reward. We will miss her.

Jerry, I have fabulous memories of your mom and the time the Jones’ spent with the Clayton’s in Big Spring. I enjoyed visiting your house (especially during the Christmas holidays) when we were kids to see (and play with!) all the decorations each year and smell the aroma of the feast your mom had certainly prepared for us. Our family usually went home with more food than we had eaten! Aunt Cletha loved to cook and entertain and we loved consuming her creations and benefiting from her hospitality. She definitely knew how to make everyone feel welcome in her home. Together we would watch the birds eat and chirp and flitter about out the back window. One special bond I had with Cletha – our passion for purple as our favorite color. Aunt Cletha constantly showed interest in what I was doing with my life and was so complimentary of each thing I accomplished. She was a very caring and thoughtful person. My thoughts and prayers are with you and my dad during this difficult time. We should focus on celebrating Cletha’s life and her influence on all those around her. She was a special person who always had a twinkle in her eye and a smile on her face. Cletha will watch over all of us for many years to come...

We are friends of the family, namely Jarry Clayton. I did not know Cletha, but from reading about her, she sounds like an amazing Christian woman who lived a full life and lovingly affected many people. We know her son, Jerry, and he is a wonderful, accomplished man...no doubt to his mother's influence. We are so sorry for the family's loss. My heart and prayers go out to you and yours. I know how hard it is to lose your mom. I remember so many times being at East Forth and your mom was one of the first friendly faces that I would see! She was truly a very sweet and caring woman. She was a woman who truly lived the Christian life and was an example to all of us. She was very helpful to my family while she served on the grienvence committee. Helped us get through both funerals with lots of food and fellowship. Jerry I know how hard this is on you but you know that she is in God's hands and happy there. Its a hard time for you but God and time will heal you. Remember the good times with your mom. I remember a lot of them! Take care and stay in touch.

Losing a parent is one of the hardest times in your life. You are in my prayers.

My deepest sympathies in the passing of your beloved mother. I hope sweet memories of your time together can help ease your pain.

Although we did not have the good fortune of personally knowing Mrs. Clayton, we were deeply saddened to learn of her passing. We know that the good Lord will give all of those in mourning the strength and courage to forge onward during this difficult and challenging time. Undoubtedly, Mrs. Clayton will be sorely missed by all who knew her, and those who wish they had. Good Lord above, continue to feed and watch over us all, as only through you can we truly be nourished.

Even though every one of us loses a parent twice in our lives, it's never easy and always very personal. We love and support you and stand by you with strength.

Mrs. Clayton, We never got the opportunity to meet you so we only knew you through Jerry. Knowing him like we do, we can only believe that you were an exceptional woman as Jerry has been a true friend and brother to us. Know that we are with him for support through this tough time. Very sorry to hear this. I have great memories from when I was a child and spent many nights at her home. Best wishes to Jerry and the family during this hard time.
