A graveside memorial service for Clara Zack, will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, September 20, 2004 at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park with Rabbi Ralph Mecklenburger of Congregario Beth-El in Fort Worth, presiding. Mrs. Zack passed away Thursday, September 16, 2004, at Mountain View Lodge, where she had received loving care for two and a half years.Mrs. Zack was born in Pahuska, Oklahoma and moved to Pampa when she was a junior in high school. She was recognized as the school beauty that year. The following year she moved to Big Spring and graduated from Big Spring High School in 1930.She married Jim Zack in New York City in 1931, where she was attending New York University. They moved to Big Spring where Clara's mother operated a dry goods store on the North Side. Clara and Jim worked together in the clothing business in Lubbock and Killeen. They eventually founded Zack's Ladies Ready to Wear in Big Spring and operated it for more that thirty years. She served on the advisory board of the Merchandise Mart in Dallas.Clara served as treasurer for the Big Spring Concert Association, was on several Chamber of Commerce committees, produced style shows, chaperoned the Big Spring candidates in the Miss Texas pageants, was a volunteer at the Big Spring State Hospital and traveled the world with her husband, Jim. She founded a Sunday School for Jewish young people when Temple Israel was active in Big Spring. Clara was an honorary member of the Big Spring Rotary Club.She is survived by her daughter, Susan Lewis and her son-in-law, Bob Lewis, both of Big Spring. Survivors also include her grandson, Kevin Lewis and his wife, Jill of Dallas; grandson, BZ Lewis and his wife, Margaret of Daly City, California; three great-grandchildren, Jackson Lewis, Max Lewis and Caleb Lewis; a niece, Toy Layson of Macon, Georgia and two nephews, Bill Curry of Hot Springs, Arkansas and Joel Curry of Auburn, California. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Zack in 2002.
