Charles M. Moffett of Midland passed onward on April 28, 2022, at the age of 83. He was born on April 12, 1939, in Ranger, Texas and grew up the only child of Fred Cleo Moffett and Mary Leona Barrett Moffett. He spent his youth in numerous oil field towns throughout Texas and New Mexico following his father’s work as an electrician. His family moved 32 times before they settled in Snyder, Texas in 1950.
Charles had fond memories of times spent on his Moffett grandparents’ 100-acre farm growing wheat and raising milk cows and sheep. His fun included fishing and shooting jackrabbits with his pet border collie as a companion.
Charles professed his faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized along with his father in the Penwell Church of Christ. After moving to Snyder, his family remained active in the Church of Christ there. Among his favorite memories were family vacations to the Davis Mountains and through the western U.S. on adventures in Colorado and Yellowstone National Park.
Charles graduated from Snyder High School and commented that his high school activities revolved around “passing”. He paid his way through college washing dishes in the cafeteria at Abilene Christian College where he majored in accounting and he received his Bachelor of Science degree, graduating in 1961.
Several of Charles’s buddies depended upon him for transportation because of his reliable 1953 Plymouth. His roommate even used his car to propose marriage to his wife-to-be. Post college, Charles was inducted into the U.S. Army, stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia and honorably discharged from active duty in 1963 and then completed two more years of service in the Army Reserves.
Charles was hired by Texaco as a production department accountant in 1963 and left them in 1988 to join Wagner and Brown where he worked until his retirement in 2008. He regarded his time at Wagner and Brown as truly rewarding and he held deep respect for his working colleagues.
Charles was gifted with a sharp wit and a wry smile and was continually bringing smiles and chuckles to those around him. He maintained 65-year friendships with his Abilene Christian classmates Rayford McIlhaney, Oran Isbell, and Dale Reynolds along with their wives. He resided at Manor Park the last 14 years of his life was a favorite of other residents as well as the Manor Park staff. Charles was faithfully served and cared for by Degen Fricker and Cori Armstead in the last chapter of his life.
