Carroll Morgan Thomas, born October 26, 1938, in Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully March 22, 2025. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and respected member of the Midland community.
Carroll graduated from Midland High School and earned Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Geology from Texas Tech University. His master’s thesis focused on pisolites in the Guadalupe Mountains. In 1968, he married Georgia Lee Hall, and they raised two children, Brian and Christy.
His geological career spanned decades, beginning with Mobil Oil Corporation and progressing through various firms before he established his own consulting practice. Carroll’s expertise in exploration and production geology, particularly in the Delaware Basin, was widely recognized. He made significant scientific contributions, particularly concerning pisolites and Strawn biogenic bank reservoirs, and received an Honorary Lifetime Membership in the West Texas Geological Society in 1987.
Carroll was deeply committed to civic engagement. He was active in the Midland Jaycees, the Rotary Club of Midland (serving as President), the Midland Chamber of Commerce, and the City Planning and Zoning Commission (serving as Chairman). He also contributed to the Central Division Arthritis Foundation, the Boys Club of Midland, and the American Cancer Society.
His dedication extended to politics. He was involved in the Midland County Young Republicans, the Texas Young Republican Federation, and the Midland County Republican Party. He served as Campaign Chairman for Ernest Angelo’s mayoral campaign and Midland County Chairman of Citizens for Reagan for President Finance Committee. He served on the Midland City Council from 1975 to 1983, including a term as Mayor Pro-tem, and as Mayor of Midland from 1986 to 1992. He also served as President of the Mayors, Councilmen, and Commissioners Association of Texas Municipal League.
A man of faith, Carroll was a long-time member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and Chairman of the Membership Committee. He was a founding member and Elder of Stonegate Fellowship.
Carroll will be remembered for his faith, his dedication to his family, his commitment to his community, and his contributions to geology. He was preceded in death by his parents Carroll and Evelyn Thomas and infant son Craig. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Georgia; his son, Brian his wife Melissa and their daughters, Emma and Morgan; his daughter Christy and her daughter, Crystal and her husband Gabriel and their sons Austin and Aiden, his brother Steve his wife Donna, and many relatives and friends.
