C. J. Smith, 88, of Big Spring, formerly of Abilene, died on Friday, August 28, 2009, in local nursing home. Graveside funeral services will be held at 9:00 AM Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Mt. Olive Memorial Park in Big Spring with Rev. Walter McCall, Compass Hospice Chaplain, officiating.He was born on October 6, 1920, in Navarro, Texas. He married Ruby Allen and she preceded him in death in January 2004.C. J. was a longtime resident of Abilene and moved to Big Spring in 2005. He had worked for Furr's Supermarket for 23 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member and served as a deacon of Holiday Hills Baptist Church in Abilene and served in the United States Army. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.Survivors include a daughter, Verdie Lee Miller of Missouri; one brother, Robert Smith of Clovis, New Mexico; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
