C.E. (Mike) Thomas, III, lifetime resident of Big Spring, passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2023. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Friday, September 1, 2023 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, September 2, 2023 at the First Methodist Church with Ricky Carstensen officiating.
Mike was born to parents Clyde (Doc) Erwin Thomas, Jr. and Jane Eden Lucas Thomas in Big Spring, Texas. He graduated from Big Spring High School in 1974 and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Texas. He married Teri Adams in Big Spring in 1979. She preceded him in death. He began practicing law in 1984 and was a successful lawyer. He married Tammy Phernetton December 27, 2013 in Big Spring.
Mike loved Big Spring. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He served the community for many years as City Attorney and Howard County Attorney.
Mike loved family trips at Lake LBJ and “The Ranch” in Mason, Texas. His number one hobby was spending time with his nine grandchildren. He also enjoyed snow skiing and swimming laps. He loved watching and talking sports, especially UT Football. He also loved his Golden Doodles and all animals.
He is survived by his wife, Tammy Thomas; his daughter Allison Johnson and husband Matt; sons Jason Thomas and wife Christine, Scott Thomas and wife Connie, Keaton Martin and wife Berklie, and Kody Barber; his grandchildren Thorston and Leo Johnson, Lili and Max Thomas, Leighton and Sullivan Thomas, Kendell and Rhett Martin, and Hadley Barber; his sisters Katie Grimes, Cleo Kaufmann and Nancy Allen along with numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends and colleagues.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Teri and two brother-in-laws Col. Jerry Grimes and Chuck Kaufmann.

Howard County has lost a great man & attorney. I met Mike when I started working in County Clerks Office 18 years ago. For years I sat in on different cases where he represented the client. Always very professional & you could tell he was very knowledgeable & passionate about his job.
