C. David Schmelzer, 65, of Midland, passed away on Monday, December 11, 2006 in Midland. Viewing will begin at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 and a visitation will be held from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM, Thursday, December 14, 2006 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory, 3800 N Big Spring Street in Midland.David was born on February 21, 1941 to Carle and Geraldine Schmelzer in Natalia, Texas. He attended Midland schools and then joined the United States Army where he served in Germany. Upon his completion of his military tour of duty, he attended Odessa College where he excelled in petroleum drafting. For 43 years he was employed in Midland as a draftsman and Geotech. David worked during those years for Conoco, Chevron USA, and finished his career at Mewbourne Oil Company in 2003.He was well known for his quick wit and fun loving nature. A master woodworker, David created beautifully detailed inlaid and veneered boxes. He also loved gardening and kept a courtyard which was a joy to all who saw it.Exceedingly generous, he substantially supported Lubbock MHMR and also Lubbock's Marion Moss Enterprises, which employs the disabled. When the Midland Cerebral Palsy Center, now known as Children's Rehabilitation Center was first built, he gave his time and effort in helping to develop the landscaping which remains today.Survivors include his wife, Sandy Schmelzer of Midland; a daughter, Camarie Schmelzer of Lubbock; two sisters, Diane Locklar and husband, Frank of Midland and Sandra Capeheart and husband, Gene of Lamesa; an aunt, Evelyn Allen of Midland; and numerous nieces and nephews.David was preceded in death by his parents.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
