Billy Kirk Powell passed away on June 26, 2024. Billy was born on November 5, 1944, to Charles and Lois Powell in Kermit, Texas.
The family will receive friends from 5pm-7pm, Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at Gilbreath Funeral Home in Stanton. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at First Baptist Church of Stanton. Interment will be at 1:00 pm at Resthaven North Cemetery in Midland.
Billy attended school in Wickett and Stanton school districts and was a graduate of Stanton High School. He went to work for the Texas Highway Department. He worked for TxDOT for 35 years before retiring in August 2003. Billy married Judy Walker on January 14, 1973, and lived many happy years in Stanton.
Billy was a huge fan of Stanton Buffaloes football and other sports. While he never sat in the stands, he cheered them on from the sidelines. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Stanton and the the Stanton Lions Club for many years.
Billy is best known as the “quarter man.” When the government started issuing quarters honoring the states, he would purchase two to three rolls of each state and give them away. We would love to know how many state quarters he actually gave away to family, friends, and acquaintances. He was also known for giving away $2 bills–a favorite gift of all his great nieces and nephews. Billy was a very loving and generous man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Kovey Powell, and his grandparents.
He is survived by his wife Judy and sisters Mary Bellah of Woodson and Kay Simpson of Stanton. He is also survived by nieces Karla Canada, Jill Luna, Kim Miller, and Amy Judd, nephews Dennis Simpson and Chad Bellah, and several great nieces and nephews.
