Betty Jean Burks Freeman passed peacefully from this life on Friday, August 11, 2006, in Midland, TX, with her daughter at her side. Betty was born in Levelland, TX, on June 9, 1926, the first child of W.E. (Gene) and Christine (Clifton) Burks. She graduated from Levelland High School in 1944 and then from Sul Ross University. Betty moved to Lubbock, her last move of many, in 1976. In Lubbock she worked at Smylie Wilson Junior High and Covenant Hospital until her retirement. Betty loved books, music, flowers, animals?especially cats–laughing, giving gifts and most of all her one daughter, Ric? Freeman-Zachery and her adored?and adoring?second child, her son-in-law, Earl Zachery.Preceding Betty in death were her parents, one brother, Baylor Burks of Seminole, and a sister, Mary Burks Reid of Idalou. She is survived by her daughter, Ric? Freeman-Zachery and husband Earl Zachery of Midland, and two brothers, A.A. Burks of Keller, TX, and his wife, Frances; and W.D. Burks of Lubbock and his wife, Louise. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews to whom their "Aunt Betty" was so special, and her much-loved feline companion, Spots.The family will have their own private memorials, and no other services are planned.
