Betty J. Franklin

Betty J. Franklin, beloved wife, mother, and teacher, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2024 in her home in Midland Texas. Born on March 30, 1932, in Olton, Texas, Betty lived a life filled with love, accomplishment, and profound connections with those around her. Her gentle spirit and unwavering devotion touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts.

Betty was the youngest child of James Wozencraft and Claudia Powell Wozencraft. She met the love of her life Fred I. Franklin, Sr. in Midland in 1948 and soon married. When Fred joined the Air Force they were stationed in Illinois and Louisiana where their first child Fred Jr. was born. They returned to Fred’s native Big Spring and had three more children: Gregory, who died as an infant, Lynda Wood and Kristi Brumfield.

Betty’s passion for education led her to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree from Sul Ross State University and embark on a fulfilling career as a teacher. For 22 years, she dedicated her time and energy to shaping young minds. She loved teaching special education at Coahoma Elementary, leaving an enduring impact on countless students who fondly remember her guidance and nurturing nature.

Betty cherished her roles as a wife and mother. She shared 67 years with Fred and together they navigated life’s joys and challenges. They loved travelling and visited 49 states. She and Fred also loved dancing and were avid volunteers.

Betty was a woman of faith and found solace in her Baptist beliefs. Her unwavering spirituality sustained her throughout her life, giving her strength during difficult times and guiding her through moments of joy and gratitude. Her relationship with God was a source of comfort, and her faith continues to inspire all who knew her.

Betty’s genuine warmth, compassion, and radiant smile touched the hearts of those fortunate enough to cross her path. She had a unique ability to make everyone around her feel seen, heard, and loved. Betty’s infectious laughter, wise counsel, and unwavering support turned strangers into lifelong friends and transformed ordinary moments into cherished memories.

Betty is survived by her two daughters, Kristi Brumfield and Lynda Wood, son-in-law James Brumfield, and five grandchildren: Krystal (Bobby) Subia, Taylor (Jessica) Franklin, Austin (Whitney) Franklin, Hunter Hyatt, and Chandler Hyatt. She is also survived by six great grandchildren and one great great grandson as well as many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, two sons, daughter-in-law Diane Franklin, granddaughter Alexandria Hyatt and adoring husband Fred.

As we reflect on Betty’s remarkable life, let us celebrate her legacy of kindness, resilience, and unwavering love. Though we mourn her loss, we find solace in knowing that she is now at peace, forever watching over us from above with Fred.

The family will receive friends from 2pm-4pm, Sunday, January 21, 2024 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel in Big Spring. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

In honor of Betty’s compassionate spirit, donations may be made in her memory to Manor Park, Inc in Midland, Texas or Midway Baptist Church in Sand Springs.
