Arlie Lawrence Bryant, 99 of Midland, passed away on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 in Big Spring, Texas. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 27, 2018 from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Greenwood Baptist Church with burial to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.Arlie was born on May 30, 1919 to Essie and William Bryant in Arp, Texas. Arlie was a long time resident of Midland and the Greenwood Community, arriving in 1925 with his parents from the small East Texas town Arp, Texas.Arlie attended school in Greenwood and high school in Courtney, Texas. After school he worked on the family farm. In the early summer of 1940 he met an old friend Mary Evelyn Taggart and after dating a few months they were married on December 22, 1940 in Ackerly, TX. by Mr. Bryant’s uncle the Rev. Martin T. Bryant. In February 1943 Arlie volunteered for the US Army and was sent for training in Ft. Hood, TX. After basic training Arlie was sent to the South Pacific where he was to join the 96th Infantry Division. His Division made the landing on Okinawa where Arlie was severely wounded in a battle for Zebra Hill. He was air lifted from the field hospital to Saigon for major surgery, then to Guam to recuperate. After his recuperation he rejoined his division for a trip to Japan when President Harry Truman ordered the atomic bomb dropped on Japan. Arlie was then sent to Corregidor where he was in charge of the supply boat for the POW camp there. In 1946 he returned home and was employed by the Superior Oil Company. In 1952 he established the ABC Extermination Company which he operated until his retirement in 1986.Arlie is preceded in death by his 4 brothers, Jack, Marvin, Alvey and W.T.; and 6 sisters, Viola, Edna, Artis, Elva, Vergie and Lottie.Arlie and Mary Evelyn enjoyed 77 years of marriage. They had two children Larry Bryant and wife Sharron of Alpine, TX; daughter, Patty Bryant of Midland; 3 granddaughters, Kimberly and husband, Dan; Lori and husband, Maury; Melissa and husband, Peter; 3 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.Arlie loved his Lord, his family, friends and home. One of his passions was playing Gospel and Country Western music on his guitar. He loved his church where he taught Sunday School, and was an active Deacon for many years.He leaves behind his wife, Mary Evelyn Bryant; son, Larry Bryant and wife, Sharron of Alpine, TX; daughter, Patty Bryant of Midland; 3 granddaughters, Kimberly and husband, Dan; Lori and husband, Maury; Melissa and husband, Peter; 3 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
