Amanda Jane Thompson, 89, of Midland died peacefully February 20, 2013 at Mabee Healthcare Center in Midland. Jane was the youngest daughter of Mary Haggard and Andrew J. Smallwood.She was born in Hillsboro, TX on December 4, 1923. She preceded in death by her loving husband Richard S. Dick Thompson, her parents, four sisters, Esberne Blair of Mexia, Arvilla Bryant of Dallas, Etoile Brooks of Amarillo, and Malita Wilkinson of Dallas, two brothers Kirkpatrick Smallwood of Hillsboro and Jack Smallwood of Waco, and her grandson, Michael Thompson of Boerne.She is survived by her daughter Suzi Thompson and husband Paul Thompson of Midland, and sons David Thompson and wife Beth of Boerne TX and Keith Thompson and wife Belinda of El Paso TX. Jane is survived by grandsons Paul M Thompson, Bradley Thompson, Scott Thompson, Russell Thompson and Travis Thompson as well as granddaughters Elizabeth Nelson and Lauren Thompson. She is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren Daniel, Kaitlin, David, Stryker, Rachael, Gabriel, Abby, Will and Wyatt.Amanda Jane Smallwood attended school in Hillsboro and graduated from Hillsboro Junior College in 1942. She worked for the Federal Reserve Bank in San Antonio TX until she met and married Lt. Richard S. Dick Thompson on July 3, 1944. They resided in Warrensburg, Missouri until he was sent to the European Theater of Operations as a pilot. She returned to Hillsboro and remained there until Dick returned home in June of 1946. They moved to Jackson, MS and were transferred to New Orleans, LA and later to Oklahoma City OK and Ardmore OK. Later they lived in Amarillo, Lubbock, El Paso, Plano and finally retired in Midland in April of 1993.Jane attended Texas Tech while she resided in Lubbock and later received her Bachelor of Science in Education at the University of Texas at El Paso in August 1974. She taught sixth grade at Eastwood Heights Elementary School, El Paso for two years before moving to Plano TX in 1977. She taught eighth grade English at Haggard Middle School in Plano and attended classes at Texas Womans University where she received her Master of Education degree with a minor in Gifted Education in August 1982. She was appointed Team Leader of the gifted program, PACE, for sixth through eighth grade at Haggard.She taught 7th and 8th grade Honors English to PACE students. Her students won numerous awards in many academic competitions including Odyssey of the Mind, Whiz Kids, and Pentathlon. Jane retired from Plano Independent School District after thirteen years in May of 1990. Her beloved husband, Dick, passed away just 5 months short of their 50th anniversary in March 1994.The family is especially grateful to Mae Brackens, Moms friend and companion for these last three years; her loving care for Mom was a great blessing. Mae is truly a part of our family. They also wish to thank the staff of Mabee Healthcare Center, Manor Park, and Hospice of Midland for their tender, dedicated care.Amanda Jane was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Midland. She volunteered to help with the monthly newsletter there. She was also an active member of the Newcomers Club of Midland, En Amie, and the Book Ends book club.Graveside services will be held at 11:30 am, Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Resthaven Memorial Park. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Grace Presbyterian Church in Midland with Rev.
