Alma Joy Long passed from this world into the eternal kingdom on July 24, 2009.She was born December 21, 1924 in Cypress Mill, Texas as the first daughter of William and Pansy Lawson. Her early years were spent growing up on a ranch in Sterling County, Texas. Alma played on Sterling City High School championship volleyball team in the early 1940's. During the Second World War she journeyed with her family to support the war effort by working in the shipyards of Portland, Oregon.Following WW II she returned to Sterling City and married Robert Long. In the following years, she was a homemaker and mother. Alma always wanted to be a nurse. Returning to classes, she obtained her LVN nursing education at Medical Arts Hospital. An exceptional nurse, she worked at various hospitals in Big Spring form many years. The last years of her career she was on the nursing staff at the Big Spring State Hospital. The year of her retirement in 1991, she was honored as the BSSH employee of the year.Her mother, Pansy, and father, William "Bunk" Lawson, brother Alvin Lawson, and brother-in-law, Jim Long preceded Alma in death. She is survived by her husband, Robert H. Long of Big Spring; a sister, Helen Adams and husband, Edward of Pearland; a son, Russell Long and wife, Jo-Anne of Charlotte, North Carolina; a daughter, Russlene Waukechon and husband, John of Round Rock; sisters-in-law, Joy Henderson and husband, Buddy of Donna and Bonnie Long of Big Spring. She was the proud grandmother of Nicholas Long and wife, Shelia, Matthew Long and wife, Julie, Benjamin Waukechon, Kateri Waukechon and Joseph Waukechon; and, aunt of Lynn Rollins and wife Jan, Judy Falnagan, Janet Adams, and Stacy Adams and wife Michele.The family wishes to thank the staff of Home Hospice for their love, care and compassion they provided Alma during the last years of her life.Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Chaplain Cherice Felty, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.The familiy will receive friends from 6 PM to 8 PM Monday at the funeral home.,
