Allene Hamilton, 97, a 60+ year resident of Big Spring, passed away Sunday morning, May 10th, 2015 in Fort Worth. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:00 AM Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. Graveside services will immediately follow at 11:00 AM at the Evergreen Cemetery in Stanton. Allene was born May 18, 1917 in western Howard County on the family farm to Joan and George M. Long. The family moved to Stanton where Allene graduated from Stanton High School in 1934. She attended Mary Harden Baylor and then transferred to North Texas University where she graduated in 1937 with honors at age 19. Allene began a teaching career at Cauble School in Howard County and also taught at Forsan before marrying. Allene married Cecil L. Hamilton December 24th, 1939 in Stanton; he preceded her in death after 57 years of marriage March 4, 1993. She was also preceded by her parents and brother, Elmer J. Long. Their early married life was in Odessa, but they lived in Brady and in Kansas City, Mo. where he was stationed in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII. They moved back to Big Spring in 1947 where he operated Hamilton Flying Service and she was a first grade teacher at South Ward and then at Washington Place Elementary for another 35 years; she retired in 1985 after 42 years of teaching. Mrs. Hamilton was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority for teachers, and of the Questers Sunday School Class of the First United Methodist Church in Big Spring. She served as a volunteer at Scenic Mountain Medical Center for a number of years following retirement from teaching. She was known for her happy countenance, her love of her students, and her love and devotion to her family. Mrs. Hamilton is survived by a son and his wife, Horace and Wenona Hamilton of Richland Hills; three grandsons: Gregory and his wife Kimberly of Carrollton, Darrell of Arlington, and Karl of Flower Mound; and of one granddaughter, Rhonda and husband Peter Gaber of Weatherford. She is further survived by five great-grandchildren: Joseph, Charlie, Gracie and Jack Hamilton, and Brianna Gaber Elmore, by a great-great grandson and by nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice or to the First United Methodist Church of Big Spring. Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.
