Alice Jean MartinAugust 21, 1938 – June 23, 2012Alice Jean Martin, 73, a determined but generous, practical and caring mother and grandmother, died Saturday, June 23, 2012, in Midland. Born August 21, 1938, in LeFlore, Oklahoma, to parents Minnie and Sol Kitchens, Alice was the ultimate civil servant, retiring from the Social Security Administration after many years of faithful service and also following the love of her life, Billy Martin, across the world throughout his 20-plus years of service in the Army.Alice Kitchens and John William (Billy) Martin married on January 19, 1955. During their marriage, the family was stationed in Fort Crowder, Missouri; Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; Karlshrue, Germany; Fort Bragg, North Carolina and Midland, Texas, before they built their dream home on Billy's homestead in Victor, Oklahoma in the mid-1970s.In 1995, Alice and Billy moved back to Midland and became active members of Fairmont Park Church of Christ. Always organized, Alice helped care for her grandchildren as well as Billy, and she always had from-scratch meals and baked goods ready for everyone to enjoy. Her yeast rolls, corn bread dressing, white fruit cake, apricot pie, pumpkin rolls and pecan pie using pecans from their own backyard were some of the family favorites. She loved her dog Molly, and she was sharp as a tack even as her health started to decline over the last four-plus years. Alice gave selflessly throughout her life and was proud first and foremost of her family.She is survived by her sister Mildred Roberts of Fort Worth; three children Brenda Jurgens of Victor, Montana, Gary Martin (Beverly) of Marble Falls and Greg A. Martin (Amy) of Midland; nine grandchildren, Meagan Martin, Mercedes Mayer, Kari-Ann Martin, Cole Stout, Trent Stout, Haley Martin, William Grant Martin, William Blaine Martin and Reagan Martin; and four great-grandchildren Jackson Stout, Breleigh Jean Mayer, Annslee Stout and Kennedi Stout.She was preceded in death by her husband Billy Martin; her parents; and a grandson, John Hayden Martin.Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at Fairmont Park Church of Christ, with Don Mitchell officiating. Alice and all the Martins are considered to be some of our best friends in the world. We will all miss Alice. She was an extremely giving person and a person you could count on. Her and Bill were a true team. They loved their family and their friendship was cherished by everyone that knew them. The Martins took care of my family while I was in Viet Nam. Knowing they were there made the stress of being away from my family much easier. We loved your mom and dad and have prayed lots of prayers for both of them and all of you during her illness and when Billy was taking such good care of her when she got sick.
