Alan Paul Hewitt, of Midland, TX, passed away August 2, 2014 in his home. Alan, 83, was born on January 21, 1931 in Ashtabula, Ohio to Paul and Belva Hewitt.His love of flying began at age 12 and he received his pilot license at age 16, even before his driving license. After graduating from Edgewood High School, he went to the Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, OK for a semester. After recuperating from a major truck accident, he changed his course and began studies in Geology at Bowling Green State University of Ohio. It was there he met and married Marilyn Bower Hewitt (Mickey). They were married in 1953 and Alan graduated in 1954 with a degree in geology.Following graduation, he was a geologist for Cities Service Oil Company for 13 years. This brought Alan and Mickey to Midland, Texas in 1957. He became an independent geologist for the remainder of his career.Alan was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He continued his love of flying for many years. He was a member of the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum. He served as a Boy Scout leader, and was both a coach and mentor to baseball and football players. He served with Meals on Wheels and served his church. Alan was active at First Presbyterian Church where he served as both deacon and elder. He had a love for gardening and farming Christmas trees in Ohio. He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be remembered for his gregarious nature, contagious laugh, big smile, and generous heart.He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter, Rosalie Kim and granddaughter, Julie Marie Phillips. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Mickey) and their five children, Kyle Phillips of Colleyville, TX; Donna Scott of Boise, ID; Kelly Hewitt of Flower Mound, TX; Diane Nance of Forney, TX and Mark Hewitt of Shawnee, KS; and grandchildren Jeremey Wayne Stover, Sarah Phillips Hlavacek, Jamey Stover Newton, Amy Phillips Martinez, Nicholas Alan Scott, Clifton Lewis Nance, James Brian Phillips, Alan Tucker Hewitt, Stephanie Carol Nance, Elizabeth Julie Hewitt and Brock David Hewitt. He has 12 great children. He is also survived by his sister, Donna Bettey of Ashtabula, OH, and brothers: Gary Hewitt of North Kingsville, OH, and Bill Hewitt of Conneaut, OH.Services will be held on Thursday, August 7th at 1:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Texas Avenue, Midland, Texas 79701. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Presbyterian Church of Midland Deacon's Fund or to your favorite charity.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
