Alan George Moravcik, born December 12, 1946, in Hays, Kansas to John A. and Sylvia R. Moravcik, passed away on August 20, 2024, at the age of 77.
Growing up in Odessa, Texas, Alan attended Alamo Elementary, Bonham Junior High and Permian High School where he excelled in athletics and scholarship. He was a natural leader and excellent athlete earning All-City and All-District honors in football and baseball. He accepted a football scholarship to The University of Texas at Austin and proudly played both football and baseball for the Longhorns. Upon his graduation in 1969, he took a gap year to be an auditor and tax specialist for a big eight accounting firm, then returned to UT law school where he earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 1972. Alan practiced law in Austin for nine years before joining a firm in Midland, Texas. Five years later, he started his own practice, The Law Offices of Alan G. Moravcik. In 2018, Alan joined forces with Mark Threadgill to form Moravcik Threadgill Law Firm and then in 2019 Stuart Starry joined the practice which became Moravcik, Threadgill & Starry. Alan had a great partnership with this team and Mark has been a trusted friend and advisor to Alan and Cathie over the years.
As a loved and respected member of the legal community, Alan fought tirelessly for his clients impacting many people’s lives through his efforts. He often took on clients “pro bono” because of his desire to help people who deserved the best legal representation. Over nearly 40 years in family law, Alan served countless families, protected children in need, and created families through adoption. His law career also introduced him to two “bonus” daughters Doris and Anna that he thought the world of.
As successful as his career was, he was proudest of his family. In 1991, Alan married the love of his life, Cathie Rae in Midland where they created a beautiful life together for the last 33 years. They took care of each other and found joy in the little things. Cathie has often said that Alan was her hero who gave her the miracle of three children (Blake, Jake, and Maddie) and supported her in her journey through life. Alan adored his children and also his three beloved grandchildren (Taylor, Maci and Alex). He was a dedicated father and grandfather who took great pleasure in all of their accomplishments. Alan supported his family faithfully and always had an animal and kids nearby. He earned the nickname “Cookin” by his nephew because he was always cooking or grilling something for family. He coached his sons and nephew in baseball, read books to the little ones in the family and gave the best hugs! Alan was also very close with his brother sharing a love of sports, family and cherry pie. He also valued his lifelong friends Jimmy, Mack, Mike and Drew and took pleasure in all their shenanigans over the years.
Alan was proud of his Czech roots and had a great sense of humor that endeared him to everyone. He loved sports (especially the Longhorns!), was fun-loving, compassionate and an animal lover. Alan teased, protected and loved like no other and along the way, fought many a battle for others. Most importantly, Alan was a good man who was fast with an “I love you” and “I forgive you” and gave every single person he met the benefit of the doubt. Alan was a firm believer in Jesus Christ and prayed the Rosary every day.
Alan was preceded in death by his father, John A.Moravcik and his mother Sylvia Moravcik. He is survived by his loving wife Cathie, children Blake, Jake and Maddie, grandchildren Taylor, Maci, and Alex as well as his brother Jack (Susan) in Dallas, in laws Don and Robbye, Ken and Karen, niece Stacy, nephews Stephen, Adam, Connor and John, great nieces Juliana, Elyse, Hayven and Olivia , great nephew Parker and many extended family members who will never forget the love he brought to their lives.
A memorial mass will be held on Monday, September 9 at 10 AM at St Ann’s Catholic Church in Midland. Donations to Casa of West Texas charity are appreciated at www.casawtx.org.
