George Cummins went home to be with the Lord on February 26, 2011. Memorial services will be Thursday, March 3, 2011 at 2:30 pm at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Chapel. He was born in Grandfalls, TX on March 4, 1923. Even as a small child he was always drawn to airplanes and flying. Immediately after graduating from high school, he volunteered to join the Army Air Corps and ultimately trained as a bomber pilot flying forty bombing missions in the Pacific, striking Guam, Enewetok, Bonin and Iwo Jima. George left the Air Force after WWII, but rejoined to fight in the Korean and Viet Nam wars as a member of a Strategic Air Command Unit performing air reconnaissance missions at stations and sites all over the world. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross with 7 Oak Leaf Clusters. He married his wife, June Brumley in 1954. She preceded him in death in August 1997. They had one daughter, Caren McCourt who resides in Midland. George retired from the Air Force in 1969, but continued to fly. He and June traveled all over the United States for many years after. He moved to Midland in 1998 and was a joy to his daughter, his family and all his many friends, who will miss him. He had a joyful spirit and a rollicking sense of humor. His wry bon mots were a source of lots of chuckles. When anyone asked him what he did during his many years of service, the answer would always come back 'nothing.' Like so many who defended us during the Cold War, George did his job never asking for thanks from anyone. He is survived by daughter, Caren; nephews, Eugene Cummins, Craig Cummins and wife Bonnie, Eugene Cummins, Jr, and wife Serena; niece, Patsy Ruth Cummins; and numerous other loving relatives. He was the baby of the family and the last of six brothers and two sisters to leave us. Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
