William “Mac” Mason McFarland, 96, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, December 23, 2024, in the local Big Spring Veteran’s Hospital.
He was born on August 9, 1928, in Pueblo, Colorado, to Aurthur Mason McFarland and Marguarite Bell McFarland (Forhner). “Mac” was raised by his paternal grandmother in Frontenac, Kansas, where he graduated from high school. He went Fort Scott Junior College on a basketball scholarship. He met Bertha Isbell on a blind date at Fort Scott, and they were married November 25, 1950, at Lackland Air Force Base Chapel in San Antonio.
“Mac” enter the Air Force in 1950 and retired as a Master Sergeant in 1974. “Mac” and Bertha lived in many places across the world until finally being stationed at Webb Air Force Base. In 1974 he started working at Saunder-OED of Big Spring until he and Bertha retired in 1992. After retiring they both traveled the United States and enjoyed many fishing trips to East Texas. Bertha passed away in 2018.
Survivors include one son, James McFarland and wife, Kathie of Big Spring, two daughters, Sandra Bradbury and husband, Alan, and Terry McFarland of Canada; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to any local Veteran’s organization.
The family held a private service for him with a burial at Trinity Memorial Park.
