Wilburn Eldon Bednar, 88, formally of St. Lawrence, passed away peacefully at his cottage in Abilene, Texas April 4, 2023. He was the youngest of three brothers born near Mereta, Texas to John and Millie Bednar November 22, 1934.
A grandson of Czech immigrants, the family moved to St. Lawrence and cleared land for cotton farming. It was attending school at Garden City, where he met his love Bonnetta Cox and they were married December 16, 1955. After attending a short time at Texas Tech University, he then joined the army where he served during the Korean War. After returning home, he began farming, which he continued until his retirement.
Wilburn exemplified a servant’s heart which was evident by his many areas of community, county and state involvement. He served as a member on the local school board, as an elder of the Garden City Church of Christ, and numerous other civic minded committees and boards. He always strived to be a godly representative in each area wanting the best for those he served. One of his greatest honors was to be able to serve Glasscock County 22 plus years as their county judge.
He is survived by his children James Bednar and wife Sandy of San Angelo, Tina Bednar of Abilene, Debra Smith and husband Tim of Eula; his nephew Rodger Bednar and wife Nancy of Keller; and niece Ruth Ann Spangler and husband Gene of Las Vegas, NV. He is also survived by his grandchildren Aaron Li and husband Yu of Midland, Brandon Bednar and wife Magen of Norman, OK, Tyler Bednar of Oklahoma City, OK, Marci Frias and husband John of Edmond, OK, Tori Smith and Ethan Smith of Edmond, OK and his great grandchildren Tate and Zaylin Li.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Bonnetta (Cox) Bednar and two brothers Edwin and Clayton Bednar.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, April 8, 2023 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel, 906 S. Gregg Street, Big Spring, TX 79720. Graveside services will follow at 1:30 pm at Garden City Cemetery.
