Weldon Marvin McCollum died on May 10, 2017 at the age of 85. He was born April 18, 1932 in Loraine, Texas to Marvin Laine McCollum and Hazel Compton McCollum. He was a resident of Mitchell County most of his younger life graduating from Loraine High School in 1949. He played football for the Loraine Bulldogs in high school.Weldon farmed and worked in the oil fields until serving in the US Army 1952-1954 during the Korean Conflict. He went through basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and advanced basic training at Fort Sheridan, IL. He served in the 201st Combat Engineers back at Fort Leonard Wood, MO.Weldon married Joan Hays at Westbrook, Texas September 2, 1955. Together they moved to Midland, Kermit and Big Spring before moving back to Loraine for many years. He worked for Sun Oil and Cosden Refinery for 33 years until his retirement in 1992. They settled in Midland in 2006 to be near family. He was a sports enthusiast and officiated high school football for over 20 years. He also liked to fly and held a private pilot’s license. After retirement he and Joan traveled extensively and visited all 50 states.He served on the Cosden Credit Union board several years. He was a member of the Cosden 25 Year Club serving as President as well. He has been a member of the Big Spring and Midland Downtown Lions Clubs. He was known for cooking pancakes at their Jamboree and the Air Show.Weldon was a member of First Baptist Church in Midland. He loved his church and especially the John Department Sunday School Class.Weldon was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Billie Jean Reed, brother-in-law Bill Reed, nephew Roger Reed, great nephew Nicholas Reed, and son-in-law Randy Reavis. He is survived by his wife Joan of Midland, Texas; two daughters Susan Solomon and husband Gene of San Angelo, and Melinda Lee and husband Mike of Midland; four grandchildren, Kelli Harrison and husband Brandon of Midland, David Solomon and fiancé Kelsey Lagana of Houston, Nicole Solomon and Nick Cooprider of Houston, and Catherine Solomon and fiancé Johnny Larsen of Denver, CO; one nephew Noel Reed of Abilene; and one great niece Shyla Reed and fiancé’ Craig Buck of Dallas.Family received friends at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory in Midland from 5:00pm until 7:00pm Thursday, May 11, 2017. Interment will be at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring, Texas at 10:00am Friday, May 12, 2017. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church Chapel in Midland at 2:00pm Friday, May 12, 2017 with Rev.
