Wayne Dennis Stroud, 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Stanton, Tuesday, November 3, 2015 surrounded by his family. Services will be at 10:00 AM, Friday, November 6, 2015, at the Downtown Church of Christ in Stanton with Deral McWhorter officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Stanton. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, November 5, 2015 at Gilbreath Funeral Home in Stanton. Wayne D., as he was known to all his friends, was born February 1, 1928, just outside Stanton in Martin County to John Penny Stroud and Lena Mae Fitzgerald Stroud. At the time of his birth, his family was living just south of Stanton next to the Evergreen Cemetery. Wayne was the eighth of ten children. Wayne graduated from Courtney High School in 1945. Because he was only 17 at the time, his mother had to go with him to sign his volunteer papers for military duty. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a teletype operator and was stationed on Guam and Saipan. Upon returning from the war, he worked as a roughneck in the oil field. He married Geraldine Long (Geri) December 24, 1949, in Stanton at the Downtown Church of Christ with G.B. Shelburne, Sr. officiating. Wayne and Geri attended Sul Ross State College in Alpine where he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1954 after being inducted into the Alpha Chi honor society his senior year. While there, Wayne also earned his permanent teaching certificate. After finishing college, Wayne and Geri settled in Midland, where both worked for oil companies. In 1959, they moved to Houston, where Wayne worked for the Superior Oil Company. In 1962, Wayne and Geri decided to leave the corporate life behind and returned to farm cotton near Stanton. After Wayne and Geri retired from farming in 1982, they loved spending time with their grandchildren.Wayne is survived by his son, David Stroud and wife, Leonor of Austin; his daughter Ann Quaid and husband, Robert of Stanton; three grandsons, David Stroud, Jr. of Austin, Joshua Quaid and Ethan Quaid of Stanton, one granddaughter, Jennifer Holler and husband, Steve of Kyle; and one great-grandson, Jackson Holler of Kyle; one sister, Ruth Christy of Florida. and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 64 ½ years, Geri; four brothers, Weldon Stroud, JA Stroud, Donald Stroud, and Elmer Lee Stroud; and four sisters, Bonita Hart, Madge Soule, Marianna Williams, and Sue Elrod.The family suggests memorials to the Evergreen Cemetery Association, P.
