Dio Valcee Cox, 83, of Big Spring, passed away Saturday, December 26, 2020, in a local hospital. Memorial services will be at 10:00 AM Thursday, July 22, 2021 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Rev. Mark Lindsey, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating.
He was born July 22, 1937 in Olney, Texas to Ira Luther Cox and Thelma Loraine Parmley Cox. His father, Ira, preceded him in death in June 1937. His mother, later named Thelma Showalter, taught at various elementary schools throughout West Texas. The day after high school graduation, he joined the United States Airforce where he repaired and maintained radio and radar communications equipment for the 686th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron in Roswell, New Mexico. Nearly four years later, he pursued a Bachelor of Science in Business at Texas Tech University where he met his wife, Bettie Crawford. They married August 17, 1963 in Early, Texas.
After four years of accounting, he joined Bettie in the teaching profession. He later earned his Masters of Arts degree in history in 1975 from Texas Tech University. They taught for10 years in Seagraves, Texas, and later moved to Big Spring where he taught history at Big Spring High School for another 20 years. He enjoyed computers, photography, and amateur radio. He was very proud of his call sigh, “K5RDV”. He was both honored and humbled to serve his remaining years as a Deacon at First Baptist Church. He was also a member of the following Masonic organizations; Staked Plains Lodge #589 A. F. and A. M. in Big Spring, Centennial Lodge in Midland, the Scottish Rite of Lubbock, Suez Shrine of San Angelo and Big Spring, the York Rite of Big Spring, the Keystone Chapter #172 and Council #112, Commandery #84, Knights of the York Cross of Honor, West Texas York Rite College #36 of Lubbock, Red Cross of Constantine, Knight Masons – Libertas Council KM #83, Allied Masonic Degrees #438 and the Order of the Eastern Star Big Spring Chapter #67.
Survivors include his wife, Bettie Cox; one daughter, Amy Sperry and husband, Alan; one son, Alan Cox; and two granddaughters, Alexandra “Allie” Kinsey and Genevieve Cox.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
