Tommy "Flattop" Johnson, a 32nd degree Mason, passed away after a long battle with cancer. He would have turned 76 years old on October 11 of this year. He loved his sons, grandchildren and other family members very much.Tommy was born October 11, 1935 in Roswell, New Mexico to the late Carol Dan Johnson and Mildred Ackerman Lee, who survives him. He had lots of love and respect for his late stepfather, Charles L. Lee.Tommy is survived by his wife Lavonne Johnson, who he married December 30, 1956. On their life's journey, they had three wonderful sons and four grandchildren, Jody Johnson and his son Cole Johnson of Boerne, Jeff Johnson and his wife Elizabeth and Nicole Johnson, all of Boerne, Joel Johnson and his children Adam Johnson and Amanda Johnson, all of Austin. He is also survived by his beautiful nieces, Kim Lauderdale and Avery Arledge, Dave and Kellie and Austin Schriver, Kristie, Jim, Ashley and Andrew Chauncey, and Katherine, John, Lexie and Hannah Mulford. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Katherine Lauderdale.Tommy graduated from Midland High School in 1955, where he excelled in football. He was captain of the football team and a member of the letterman's club. He received several awards. During his junior year, he was 3rd in the state for total offense – most tackles on the line of scrimmage. He also was placed on the MISD Wall of Honor for athletic recognition in Midland.He graduated from Sul Ross State College in 1960, where he was first team all Lone Star Conference running back. Tommy graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. He also was a sprinter on the Sul Ross track team, where he ran the 100-yard dash in 9.8 seconds.He coached and taught at Lakeview High School after college. Lakeview was district champs in 1961 and 2010 all players were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Tommy was also athletic director at Trinity School. He coached and taught at Austin Junior High School. His eighth grade team won city champs.Tommy loved all sports and the young people that were involved. His greatest love beside his family was golf. Tommy and Walter Dickey started the "Senior Golf Group' at Hogan Park. This was his greatest joy, playing and being friends with all his golf buddies.The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, September 30, 2011 at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, October 1, 2011 at First Christian Church, 1301 W Louisiana AVE, Midland, (432-682-2541) with Joel Johnson, officiating and Delnor Poss, assisting. A Masonic graveside service will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.Honorary pallbearers will be The Senior Golf Group at Hogan Park. Pallbearers will be Bob Huggins, Clayton White, Jeff Hatfield, Pool Webb, Ken Scott, Steve Brittain and Chase Sammons.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
