Timothy “Tim” Cahill Thompson of Midland, TX, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2023, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease, with his two sons, Tim, Jr. and Ford, daughter-in-law, Julia and his long-term caregiver, Erika Hernandez by his side. He was 89.
Tim was born on January 30, 1934 and raised in Wichita Falls, Texas to Timothy Solomon and Helen Biles Thompson, their only child. He attended Wichita Falls High School and graduated from Colorado School of Mines with a Professional Geological Engineering degree and minored in Petroleum Engineering. He was a member and President of Kappa Sigma Social Fraternity.
He loved singing and playing banjo in his youth and most any sport. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (1957-1961) where he had a rank of First Lieutenant after college and flew planes and helicopters–his time in the Army were some of the best times of his life. He was Honorably Discharged in 1961. In 1962, he married Karen Beaird Ford of Shreveport, LA and raised their 2 sons in Midland.
His energy for life and making anyone who crossed his path feel better about themselves or at a minimum make them laugh was what truly made him special. His wit was unrivaled and there wasn’t a zinger he couldn’t crack back quickly, or something said that allowed you to 1-up him. He had incredible charisma and went to every single event he was invited to, many with his long-time love, the late Nancy Rodman Anguish. They were inseparable and traveled by plane, car, boat and train around the globe. He had much love and enthusiasm for all who cared for him at Manor.
Tim’s professional career included working for Tenneco Oil Co., Shreveport, LA; managing Terry’s restaurant in Huntsville, TX; Wilson Industries, Houston and was President and General Manager of Sargent Oilwell Equipment Co., Odessa, TX where he spent the bulk of his career. Later, he was Chairman, President and C.E.O. of Production Technologies International, Houston and as Business Consultant to the oil industry.
Tim loved his community in Midland where he lived for over 50 yrs. He served on numerous boards and leadership groups that included: Director of Permian Basin Petroleum Association; Board Director, Dawson Geophysical; President and Director of Midland Country Club; President, Petroleum Club of Midland; Board President, Petroleum Museum; Chairman and Trustee of Midland Memorial Hospital; President, Coterie Club; Legion of Honor Member, Society of Petroleum Engineers; and Theta Tau Honorary Engineering Fraternity. He was a lifelong member, served as elder and sang in the choir of First Presbyterian Church Midland.
He had a love for quail hunting in West Texas with his buddies, Martin Allday, Jim Alsup, Bill Franklin, Johnny Warren and many others. He also loved golf, skiing, flyfishing and just about anything else outdoors. He loved music and would sing anywhere to anyone who would listen. One of his happiest places anywhere was on his tractor, shredding grass at the family farm in Coleman, TX. But his first love was teaching his sons what it meant to be a man and how to do the right thing. At a very early age, he taught them how to play golf (along with the strict etiquette); to ski, fish and shoot guns. It was a big moment for them when they were old enough to join his “A-Team” hunting group and to let them periodically play with his golf buddies at Midland Country Club.
Tim is survived by his sons, Timothy Cahill, Jr. of Houston and Ford Benjamin, daughter-in-law, Julia and grandchildren Charlotte Ann, Annabelle Meredith and Ford Benjamin, Jr. all of Austin, TX. He is preceded in death by his parents, longtime companion, Nancy Rodman Anguish, and daughter-in-law, Meredith Shelly Thompson .
The family would like to express their gratitude towards Manor Park of Midland, Midland Memorial Hospital and Hospice of Midland for the care they gave him in the last years of his life. The family sends very special thanks to his caregiver, Erika Hernandez. Her commitment, love, and dedication for both Tim and Nancy go beyond words. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends–many he also called family–in the Midland and Coleman communities.
Honorary pallbearers are James “Jim” Alsup, Martin L. Allday, William “Bill” P. Franklin and Johnny R. Warren.
