Terry Dale Clutter was born December 14, 1952, in Mitchell, South Dakota to William (Bill) F. Clutter and Marlys J. Lantz Clutter; he was the eldest of five children. His father was building fences on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, when at the young age of five, he was put in charge of driving the jeep to string wire. This may or may not have been when his younger sister, Pam, “accidentally” fell out of the jeep – she claims she has never fully recovered! From the reservation, the family moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, then to Black Hawk, South Dakota. Terry attended school in Black Hawk and graduated from Stevens High School in Rapid City in 1971. While in eighth grade, he met the new girl in town as she rode her bike down the street wearing a stylish sailor outfit. It was love at first sight… for him! He eventually won her heart. Terry and Twyla married in 1972 and were married for 52 years. Terry grew up working with his father in construction until 1977 when he started his first (of many) companies. After several years, the business closed and Terry moved his wife and first two children to Midland, Texas. Once in Midland, and after the birth of their youngest child, Terry continued to work in construction until his retirement. Upon their arrival to their new home, Terry saw the deprivation of a life without Christ. After an encounter with the Holy Spirit, he gave his life to the Lord, and committed the rest of his life to His service.
Terry had many hobbies he enjoyed in his younger years such as traveling, flying, hunting, fishing, sports, playing music, and spending time with his loved ones as often as he could. He obtained his pilot’s license in 1979 and spent many hours soaring through Northern skies. In later years, he played bass with the Kairos Ministries band Men of Praise for many years. He spent countless summer weekends at Possum Kingdom Lake with his family where he taught his grandchildren how to fish, ride the inner-tube, and how to race the lake birds in the Pontoon boat. He also loved to go on adventures with his closest and best friends to New Mexico, New York, Nashville, Boston, and many other exciting places. He always managed to find himself in some mild trouble that made for delightful stories. Terry also enjoyed activities and titles such as booster club President for the Greenwood Rangers football team, coach for YMCA Basketball, Backhoe rodeo winner (multiple times), and raising hogs for his children as they participated in 4H. His most notable was becoming an Ordained Deacon of Greenwood Baptist Church in 1987 where he had served as a member until his passing. During his time at Greenwood Baptist, he served on several teams and committees, but he most enjoyed his position on the worship team playing the bass. Terry Clutter was, above all else, a faithful servant to the Lord. There was never a soul that crossed his path untouched by his warmth, kindness, and love. He cherished his family, friends, and community, and always kept his faith even amid illness. From serving his community to sending daily Bible verse texts to his family, Terry made sure to devote his life to spreading the love and gospel of Christ.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Marlys Clutter, one brother Doug Clutter, mother-in-law Lee Willier, and some extended family. He is survived by his loving and faithful wife Twyla, his three children and their spouses Eric and Brandy Clutter of Graford, TX, Scott and Tanya Turner of San Angelo, TX, Tyler and Ashley Clutter of Midland, TX; his five grandchildren Amber (Daniel) Williams, Timothy (Melody) Turner, Gabbie Turner, McKinley Clutter, and Savannah Clutter; his two great grandchildren Jameson Turner, and Harper Turner; his siblings Pam Keller, Linda Cone, and Ron (Cathy) Clutter; and his many other beloved extended family members.
