Sylvia S. Roberts, 80, died on August 6, 2013 at her home in Midland.She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Phil Roberts of Midland; daughter Jana Hinkley and her husband, Jeff, of Midland; daughter Elaine Compton and her husband, Greg, of Spring, TX; grandson Matt Hinkley and his wife, Kymberly, of New York City; grandson David Hinkley of Austin; granddaughter Allison Compton of Spring; and brother Lee Matt Smith Jr. of Buckholts, TX.Sylvia was born January 20, 1933 to Lee M. and Elsie Lou (Hill) Smith in Alpine where she attended public schools and Sul Ross State University. She married Phil on January 16, 1952 and they were in California while he was in the U.S. Navy. They lived in Alpine, Austin, Beaumont and Breckenridge before moving to Oklahoma City in 1958.While in Oklahoma City, Sylvia was a Camp Fire Girls leader when her daughters were members. She was a charter member of the A.I.M.E. Wives Club and served on the board of the League of Women Voters. She also belonged to two bridge clubs and a neighborhood sewing group.After moving to Midland in 1968 with her family, Sylvia took up golf and enjoyed playing as a member at Ranchland Hills Country Club and thenMidland Country Club, where she was president of the Womens Golf Association in 1986. She also served on the board of the Ladies Association of Midland Country Club. Sylvia worked for many years as a land secretary and accounting clerk for J. Hiram Moore in Midland. After retiring, she learned Mah Jongg and enjoyed playing with a group on Mondays. She loved sewing, knitting and reading.Preceding her in death were her parents and a sister, Judith Glasscock.The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Hospice of Midland and Sylvias devoted caregivers from Private Home-Health Care for the compassionate and gentle care they provided.At Sylvias specific request, there will be no funeral service. The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 10 between 2:00 and 4:00 oclock in the afternoon at Sylvia & Phils home, 1003 Shirley Lane. Online condolences can be made at www.npwelch.com.
