Debra L. Haynes (Kemp, then) Breen left a message on October 17, 2021:
Shirley Matthews was my inspiration as an educator, artist and art historian. She was a wonderful person. I took drawing and Art History from her at Lon Morris, worked out of Dean Matthews office in the work study program and attended church with her at FUMC, Jacksonville. The world was a better place with her in it. May peace be with the Matthews family, relatives and friends as you grieve Shirley's loss.

Shirley was a special friend and colleague. I enjoyed our time together at Lon Morris College and our work together on the collection of stories in "Spiritual Autographs." Blessings on all the family as you grieve her loss. I will miss her too. Jane Purtle

Anne Rudloff Stanton left a message on October 9, 2021:
Many hugs to the family. Karen was my best friend in high school and we roomed together for a few years in college and after. The Matthews house was a second home for me in many ways, and Virgil and Shirley were also my very first professors in theology and in art, and art history. These many decades later, I am also teaching and their voices, and compassion for students, are still important to me. May her memory be a blessing.
