Sandy Betus, 78, of Big Spring, went to be with the Lord Saturday, October 4, 2014 in a Midland hospital. Sandy was an extremely influential character in my Air Force career and I think of him often. He was my first supervisor and, to this day, had the greatest impact on how I developed during my time as an enlisted member and later, as an officer in the USAF. Sandy was not only a supervisor and mentor, but he was a good friend. I recall a short trip that I accompanied him on to Laredo to pick up a horse and we stopped at a run-down shack of a restaurant somewhere along the way. We bought steaks and, following Sandy’s lead, I applied a liberal dose of salsa to my steak. He warned me “not so fast” and I took a small taste of the salsa. Hottest thing I have ever tasted. The burning sensation sticks in my mind still today. I was young and innocent in my ways back then and as i moved on to other adventures and other places, Sandy slipped from my mind. As time moved on, I thought of him often and told my wife how much he influenced me and how much I admired him. Thank you Sandy. I’d love to hear from the family and share some of his adventures.
