Sam Wootan Jr., 92 of Midland, passed away on Friday, September 3rd, 2021. Memorial service will be held 10:00am Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel of Midland, Texas. Livestreaming of the service will be available at www.npwelch.com.
Sam Houston Wootan Jr. was born on May 20, 1929 in Fredonia, Texas to Sam Houston Wootan Sr. and Lillie Tennessee Henry Wootan. He joined the Army and fought in the Korean War. After leaving the Army he married Paula McCartney Wootan on November 5, 1955 in Lovington, New Mexico. They raised two children, Greg and Sharla, in Midland, Texas. Sam owned and operated Sam Wootan Construction until his retirement in 1989.
He was a grill master and spent many hours making brisket, sausage, and homemade bbq sauce. He loved cheering on his beloved Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers. He also enjoyed playing his keyboard, singing “Johnson’s Old Gray Mule” and two stepping around the kitchen. He spent many evenings playing dominoes and eating popcorn with his family.
He loved taking his grandchildren to the park and giving them his homemade pear preserves from his pear tree.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife Paula Wootan; parents and four siblings: A.C. Wootan, Selma Elliott, Helen Sanders, and Dora Gray. Left to cherish his memory are his son Greg and his wife Marla, and their children Trey and Russ. Daughter Sharla McDaniel and her husband Tom, and their children Laura and Kathryn. Great-grandchildren, Casey, Calista, Annie, Rae, Noah, Kaylee, Carter, and Sarah.
