Ronald Walter Williams

Ronald Walter Williams, born September 10, 1937, was a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend who passed away surrounded by the love of his family on 2-26-26. He was 88 years old.

Ronald was born in Palestine, Texas, to proud parents Mary and Herman Williams. The family later moved to Gladewater, Texas, where he developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for farming and agricultural management. As a young man, he excelled in showing Hereford and Dairy cattle, played football and basketball, and was a yell leader and student council leader.  Ronnie earned numerous awards during his formative years that reflected both his discipline and competitive spirit, which he carried into adulthood. In recognition of his lifelong accomplishments and character, he was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of Gladewater High School in 2012, an honor that was always special to him.

He graduated from Gladewater High School in 1956, attended Lon Morris College, in Jacksonville, Texas and continued his education at Sam Houston State University, where he earned a master’s degree in mathematics and physics.

His love of mathematics was evident from a young age. Following in the footsteps of both of his parents, he became a teacher and moved to Midland in the 1960s, where his twin brother was serving as an elementary school principal. Midland would become his home for more than 60 years, and the place he built his life, family, career, and legacy.

At the urging of his brother, Ronald was introduced to Ann Mackey, a Midland native with deep West Texas roots. Their first date was a round of golf at Hogan Park Golf Course—fitting for a man who would develop a lifelong love of the game. Ronald and Ann enjoyed years of couples’ twilight golf and cherished the friendships formed on the course. A longtime member of Midland Country Club, he was especially proud of achieving five holes-in-one during his golfing years.

Ronald’s mathematical talent evolved into a fascination with actuarial science. When he realized he could calculate actuarial tables in his head, he found his professional calling. He joined The Equitable, Life and Financial Services Company combining his analytical gifts with a deep commitment to serving others. As his business grew, so did his entrepreneurial drive for independence. He founded Custom Benefit Services, a comprehensive Life and Health Insurance Fringe benefits brokerage that faithfully served friends, family, oil and gas clients, and Midland small businesses for decades. He served as President and CEO until the age of 84, a testament to his dedication, intellect, and tireless work ethic.

A proud American patriot, Ronald attended Boys State and served his country honorably in the United States Army, followed by eight years in the Army Reserves. He was steadfast in his love of country, always standing for the flag and holding firmly to his conservative principles.

Ronald was deeply committed to faith and community. Raised in the Methodist Church, he later became an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Midland, where he served as both Deacon and Elder. He was also involved in numerous civic organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Optimist Club. He consistently sought ways to support others, encourage growth, and strengthen the Midland community.

Though proud of his East Texas roots and always eager to return for family gatherings and celebrations, Ronald developed an equally deep pride in West Texas—Midland in particular. He was a devoted family man who valued education, discipline, and perseverance. He often encouraged his daughter to strive for excellence, proudly noting that he had made only one “B” in college—famously in physical education.

Ronald loved people. He could begin a conversation with anyone, from any walk of life, and was genuinely interested in hearing their story. His sharp mind was matched by a quick wit and warm sense of humor.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Ann Mackey Williams of Midland; his daughter, Beth Ann Gustafson and her husband, Rick, of Houston; his sister, Martha Squibb of Dallas; and several nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and his twin brother.

Ronald’s life was marked by intellect, integrity, faith, patriotism, service, and an unwavering love for family and community. His legacy will live on in all who knew him.

Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 6, 2026 at First Presbyterian Church in Midland.
